Trigger pull

You can never know this excitement until you do it. It was about 180 yards, if you maximize the video you can see the 3 deer moving right to left in the distance. The gun is a 1950's Remington 788 in .243, with a shortened stock and barrel. The ammo itself was 1970's, Remington core lokt 100 grain. The scope, a 1950's fixed 6x power. The shooter, 12 year old Eric. We chose to use the shooting stick with 1 resting point instead of two due to limited practice time. Instructions - put the cross hair right in the middle of the chest and pull the trigger. He did.

2014 and early 2015 in review

2015, the end of bird season, brought the new discovery of duck hunting in Southern Nevada. Made a couple of efforts, learned a lot. Purchased a pile of plastic ducks and a couple of "calls." So far, all they have accomplished is ducks swimming in our swimming pool.

Here are some highlights from the end of the hunting season and spring as we prepare for the 2015 hunt:

Jager's first phesant retrievals - a pair of semi wild birds. They were not part of the guided release so that held and flew just as good as wild birds.

Deer down!

I realized I didn't post info regarding the two deer hunting trips. Mid October, Garner, Katherine, Jagermeister and myself made the trek up to Ely. The best part for me was not driving and just hangin out in the back seat with Jagermeister. We set up camp on the west side of Steptoe Valley close to the White Pine & Elko county line, up at the wilderness border. Of note, we were able to find some great hiking trails and organized camp sites... who knew!
No deer, but we did see a lot of doe, had a shot at some Blue Grouse (I missed, but was fun to watch Jager hunt them, and did come away with Jager's first upland bird, a Chukar.

The next weekend, Garth, his stepson Eric, me and Jagermeister again made the journey north to Ely. This time setting up camp in a valley about 10 miles north/west of McGill.  The wind blew the whole weekend, 40mph plus. We saw a lot of deer Saturday but could never get in range so we decided to just do some off roading then turned in.  Sunday morning we again saw the same deer, stalked them, then got off some shots. Missed. Stalked them again, then bingo.
